Monroe Sweetland Award

About Monroe Sweetland

Monroe Sweetland was born in Salem, Oregon in 1910. At 42, Monroe was elected to the Oregon House, then to the Oregon Senate in 1954 and again in 1958. During these years, under Sweetland’s leadership, the modern progressive Oregon Democratic Party emerged, with victories in the governorship, both houses of Congress and in the Oregon State Legislature. Monroe spent his final years as an elder statesman, still involved with local politics and the Democratic Party of Oregon.

We salute the previous recipients of the Monroe Sweetland Clackamas County Democrat of the Year Award.
