Action On The Climate Crisis: Clackamas County Democrats' Central Committee Approves Proclamation, Echoing President Biden

By Hester Schell

On July 20, 2022 President Biden announced he would use Executive Orders to allocate $2.3 billion for action on the climate crisis. On the heels of this historical declaration, Clackamas County Democratic leadership went to work locally, drafting a proclamation to address climate goals. Right on the heels of Biden’s speech, the draft was amended and approved by the Clackamas County Democrats leadership Committee at the July monthly meeting. It uses very needed tough language.

We can be proud to be Clackamas County Democrats!

What the President said last week:

“So my message today is this: Since Congress is not acting as it should…As President, I’ll use my executive powers to combat the climate crisis in the absence of congressional actions…As President, I have a responsibility to act with urgency and resolve when our nation faces clear and present danger. And that’s what climate change is about. It is literally, not figuratively, a clear and present danger. … The health of our citizens and our communities is literally at stake. Climate change is... an existential threat to our nation and to the world. ...”
    --President Biden

Words Matter.

When the President called out the the sickening inaction of Republicans on this vital issue, he said more about the crisis than any other President has before, using words that help us transition from “climate change” or “climate crisis” to the more accurate “climate emergency.” “Existential threat” may seem exaggerated to some voters. It isn’t to this one, as evidenced by the advancing fires in southwestern Europe. Beloved Yosemite National Park is also on fire. The dammed Colorado River-fed lakes, a main water supply for the entire Southwest, are drying up. This third week of July 2022 begins a week of very high temperatures here in the Pacific Northwest. My favorite stretch of Oregon Coast (Cape Mears) is nearly devoid of any sea birds along an eight hundred mile oxygen depleted dead-water zone. Generating three quarters of all the world’s oxygen, plankton and algae on the ocean surface are struggling to reproduce. Sounds like pretty serious trouble to this voter. If it walks, talks, sounds-like-a-duck, it’s an emergency.

If we all start saying “climate emergency” and “existential threat” rather than “climate crisis” or “climate change,” could it be enough to convert MAGA big lie believers into democratic voters? Perhaps. Something needs to change to get us on a path out of this emergency so we can all get a decent night's sleep under the humming of air conditioners, all powered by sustainable alternative power, those lucky to have AC. What might “that something” be? For starters, more of us need to show up and vote.
