What Democrats Stand For
Fight inflation and preserve your spending power
Democrats voted to ban insurance companies from issuing higher-priced, surprise medical bills following emergency medical care.
The American Rescue Plan (ARP), signed into law by President Biden last year, lowered premiums for millions of Americans with health insurance.
The Biden administration is allocating $1 billion in funding from the American Rescue Plan to independent meat and poultry producers as part of an effort to boost competition and lower prices for consumers.
Democrats are vocal in calling on corporations not to raise prices just because they can.
Through the Build Back Better bill, Democrats aim to lower the cost of prescription drugs, child care and overall expenses related to raising families.
Preserve our County’s $13.50-14.75/hr. minimum wage
Democrats, with the exception of then Sen Betsy Johnson and with zero support from Republicans, voted in 2016 to increase the minimum wage in Oregon over six years and based on the geographical location of the employer.
Uphold voting rights and vote by mail
Democrats in Oregon and across the nation continue to protect voting rights and vote by mail where this effective system is in place.
Republican lawmakers in 43 states have introduced hundreds of bills aimed at limiting access to the ballot box for tens of millions of people; at least 14 states have passed restrictive laws.
Restore Election Integrity: elect honest County Clerk
County Clerk Sherry Hall was re-elected in 2018, despite her history of errors, and her incompetence became even clearer last November, when she oversaw printing of thousands of ballots that had blurred, unscannable bar codes. Hall refused help offered by Secretary of State Shemia Fagan, further delaying the final count. Read more about the election debacle.
Clackamas County Democrats have endorsed Catherine McMullen, who is running against Hall in the November election.
Rational, inclusive school curriculum
The Democratic party of Oregon platform calls for free, quality education and school cultures that highlight dynamic learning environments that apply critical and creative thinking that connects the classroom, the school, the home and the community.
We support broad curricula that includes music, the arts, civics, science, math, history, languages, literacy in media and climate and other disciplines that help develop well-rounded members of society.
We believe schools must provide a safe environment physically, emotionally and intellectually, and that all students and staff should feel safe, secure and supported.
Keep us safe: eliminate COVID
Across Oregon and the nation, Democrats continue to urge citizens to follow the scientific evidence that underpins calls for wearing protective masks, receiving vaccinations and booster shots and practicing social distancing whenever and wherever COVID infections rise.
Vaccinations and boosters are key to eliminating COVID. Thanks to Gov. Kate Brown’s efforts to prevent COVID from spreading unchecked in Oregon, 78% of residents have received at least one vaccination, while the death rate from the virus is 8th lowest in the nation.
Protect our forests and water supply
The Democratic Party of Oregon’s platform emphasizes the importance of protecting native, keystone, endangered and threatened species and states strong support for protecting and expanding federal, state and local parks, wilderness areas, recreation areas, beaches and other public-resource lands, “specifically including sites of cultural and historical importance, with first rights given to tribal nations whose treaties have been neglected or ignored.”
We support sustainable management of Oregon’s renewable agricultural, water, forest, wildlife and fishing resources.
Hold elected officials accountable
Democrats overwhelmingly voted to impeach former President Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, evidence of which has been made even clearer via hearings held by the bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol.
As stated in the state party’s platform, Democrats “condemn the bullying of elected and appointed public officials” and “condemn elected officials who encourage voter nullification, suppression and terroristic threats to our democracy.”
Preserve the right to choose
The Democratic Party of Oregon’s platform states support for the “right to reproductive freedom, including unrestricted access to full reproductive healthcare, which includes affordable, high-quality, culturally sensitive care, the full range of reproductive services, including pre- and post-natal care, contraception, gender-affirming care, fertility care and abortion, without requiring guardian, judicial, parental or spousal consent or notification.”
